The most typical question that is asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and different models available, it can be difficult for clients to decide between the two technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors give better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will explain why DLP projectors struggle with creating an equal rate of image quality.
Imagine a set of blinds in your household on your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel operates like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from when the projector switches on to when the picture reaches your screen is absolutely significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something important to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your screen all at once. The way a DLP projector works is totally different and even the way an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of making an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then draw each coloured element of the image into the complete image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the best brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at a time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP manufacturers have put a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this goes and degrades colour accuracy.
I read in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications when compared to the majority of LCD projectors. At a glance, this appears to be a benefit, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is being utilised. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you are trying to view requires moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because the colours are projected simultaneously. DLP developers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up problem, but the expense of these projectors make them hardly practical for the large part of businesses and consumers.
Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and recall how the different colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in different ways. Often with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will come up above and a spill of blue will show below an image of something as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be adjusted to take away these effects on the projected image, as each colour is processed on separate LCD panels.
The isolated real buy point (excluding price) with deciding on a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant for portability and must be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. If the result of the picture quality is vital to you, then the solution is easy. Choose an LCD projector! LCD projectors will always show bright, colourful images with fewer image errors. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 punt. Yachting became classy for the rich and royalty, but after that point the trend did not last.
The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and had large naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club persisted, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after conglomerating with other organisations, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing began in some organized manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to monarchy in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual site of British yacht racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. Each member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for large bids were held, and the club life was splendid. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to over 350 tons.
In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English held power. Sailing was for the most part for fun and reached its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and created a minimum of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the latter half of the 19th century. The style of sizeable yachts was originally largely put upon by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and built in a contemporary sense, with merely a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the use of the science of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what such science had previously done for hulls.
Because almost all sailboats were individually custom-built, there came a desire for handicapping boats previous to the one-design class boats were made. Hence, a rating rule was created, which is found in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and edited in 1919. In modern times, one of the fastest blossoming areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between such boats can be held on an even basis with no handicapping necessary. A great example is the standard International America’s Cup Class adopted for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
So long as yachting was an activity mostly for the aristocracy and the rich, cost was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The rise and desire of smaller boats happened in the later half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the hardiness of less sizeable boats. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational boats became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, during which steam started to emulate sail power in public craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were used increasingly in personal yachts. Bigger power yachts were developed to a high standard, and long-distance cruising was a favourite activity of the wealthy. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave way to those powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht archetype for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were exclusively power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.
From the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of bigger steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service during World War II.
As larger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were produced, many big yachts were using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed for World War I. From the decade following that, large power-yacht manufacture blossomed, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that point the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The building of big power boats fell away from 1932, and the fashion from then was toward smaller, less costly craft. After World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting is a widespread beloved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually owning and keeping their own small recreational yachts. The number of craft and owners increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes can be differentiated by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that imposes the same relative requirement on each taxpayer—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income grow in the same levels. A progressive tax is recognised by a more than proportional increase in the tax onus relative to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional increase in the related burden. Therefore, progressive taxes are regarded as removing a lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes are seen to increase these inequalities.
The taxes that are normally regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, can become less so within the upper-income class—particularly if a taxpayer is allowed to lower his tax base by claiming deductions or by taking certain income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income groups would also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are made.
Income measured over a given period does not necessarily provide the most appropriate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory increases in income may be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer might select to pay for consumption by reducing savings. Therefore, if taxation is made comparable with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is compared with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the share of one’s income consumed or spent on specific goods declines as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also called head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, patently are regressive.
It is difficult to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of a lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden lays crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.
In analysing the economic effect of taxation, it is relevant to distinguish between differing ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates will be specified in the legislation; commonly these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Therefore, if tax onus grows by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislature often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income rises. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates must consider provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than specified within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to know the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, since it may rely on such factors as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates signify the part of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates generally increase with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households could swamp these effects, allowing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decline as income rises.
