The most typical question that is asked when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and models available, it can be challenging for clients to make a choice between both technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors offer better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article explains why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing an equal rate of image quality.
Think of a set of blinds in your house on your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. That is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel works like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the point when the projector switches on to when the content reaches your screen is vitally significant to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to send the projector image. A significant point to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projected surface at the same time. The way a DLP projector functions is totally different and even the produced image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of projecting an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then combine each coloured element of the image into a single complete image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the best brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP manufacturers have included a white segment in the colour wheel to improve all over brightness, but this also lessens colour accuracy.
I hear in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and as such must be better. For those who are unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is able to produce. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications when compared to most LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be a benefit, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is in use. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you plan to bring to life includes moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this problem because the colours are delivered at the same time. DLP designers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up problem, but the price of these projectors make them impractical for most businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and remember how the different colours of light refract differing amounts when projected through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in different ways. Generally with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will be projected above and some extra blue will be projected below something as simple as a straight black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be fixed to minimize these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on separate LCD panels.
The only actual plus (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant to transporting the device and cannot be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is crucial to you, then the decision is simple. Choose an LCD projector! LCD projectors will always show bright, colourful images with fewer image imperfections. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), made other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 bet. Yachting was found to be popular for the rich and aristocracy, but after that time the fashion did not last.
The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and held large naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other clubs, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing was first seen in some organized manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to the throne in 1820, it came to be called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht club had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing setting of British yacht racing. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the rise of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for large bids were held, and the social life was wonderful. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to more than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English held dominance. Sailing was mostly for fun and reached its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and created a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts were within the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the later half of the 19th century. The style of sizeable yachts was originally greatly put upon by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and built in a contemporary sense, with just a model being used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the use of the science of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what science had earlier done for hulls.
Because most of all sailboats had to be individually built, there came a requirement for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were built. Therefore, a rating rule was decreed, which resulted in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and edited in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly growing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for these boats can be done on an even par with no handicapping necessary. A great example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
So long as yachting was an activity mostly for the aristocracy and the wealthy, cost was no issue, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The rise and popularity of smaller craft happened in the later half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of less sizeable craft. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational yachts became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, at which point steam started to emulate sail power in market boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in leisure vessels. Bigger power yachts were progressed to a high standard, and long-distance cruising was a favoured pastime of the affluent. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave way to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were exclusively power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.
During the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. Notably among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service during World War II.
As bigger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were produced, many bigger yachts began using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, was furthered from World War I. From the decade that followed, big power-yacht building flourished, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that time the best auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The construction of large power craft declined from 1932, and the style after that was toward smaller, less pricey boats. From World War II, lots of small naval craft were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a widespread loved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and upkeeping their own small pleasure boats. The number of yachts and owners has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas along the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes are categorized by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that imposes the same relative onus on all the taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income move in equal scale. A progressive tax is characterizable by a more than proportional rise in the tax liability in regard to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional rise in the relative onus. Therefore, progressive taxes are thought of as taking away the lack of equality in income distribution, while regressive taxes may have the effect of increasing these inequalities.
The taxes that are generally regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, may become less so for the upper-income categories—in particular if a taxpayer is permitted to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by taking certain income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income classes will also be more progressive if personal exemptions are claimed.
Income measured over the course of a given period does not necessarily offer the best measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory rises in income may be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer could elect to finance consumption by decreasing savings. Therefore, if taxation is held in comparison alongside “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than when compared with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (excepting luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the spread of own income consumed or spent on a specific good decreases as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), levied as a standard amount per capita, obviously are regressive.
It is not simple to dictate corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to uncertainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden is dependant fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.
In regarding the economic purpose of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between varied concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those nominated in the legislation; usually these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Therefore, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income rises. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates must review provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to understand the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, since it may rely on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates usually increase with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households can swamp these effects, allowing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that lessen as income rises.
