The most typical question that is asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and types available, it can be challenging for clients to choose between these technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors offer better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article tells you why DLP projectors struggle with creating a comparable standard of image quality.
It’s like a set of blinds in your home over your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. And such is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel works like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as pros like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the point when the projector turns on to when the picture reaches your screen is absolutely important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your projector screen all at once. The way a DLP projector operates is vastly different and even how an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of making an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then draw each coloured element of the image into a complete image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver top brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at any given time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP manufacturers have included a white segment for the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this further damages colour accuracy.
I find in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and thus must be better quality. For those who are unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of producing. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications as compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At a glance, this appears to be an advantage, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is used. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you plan to see requires moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because the colours are processed with the others. DLP designers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to fix the colour break up issue, but the price tag of these projectors make them hardly practical for the majority of businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and recall how the different colours of light refract differing amounts when projected through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light at different levels. Usually with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will show above and some blue will show below an image as simple as a lone black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to remove these effects on the projected image, as each colour is refracted on a separate LCD panels.
The one veritable buy point (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to mobility and must be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), made additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 wager. Yachting became classy among the affluent and aristocracy, but after that period the habit did not last.
The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, with large naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club went on, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after conglomerating with other groups, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to the throne in 1820, it came to be known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued location of British racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. Each member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for large stakes were held, and the social life was lovely. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to more than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English took power. Sailing was mostly for leisure and rose to its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and created a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts followed the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the latter half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was initially largely affected by the victory of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in the modern sense, with only a model used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what it had previously done for hulls.
Because almost all sailboats had to be individually custom-built, there was a desire for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule was created, which resulted in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and amended in 1919. In the present day, one of the rapidly growing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be done on an even basis with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
So long as yachting was an activity mostly for the nobility and the affluent, expense was no object, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller yachts came in the latter half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the seaworthiness of small yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and leisure yachts became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, when steam was set to replace sail power in public boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in personal boats. Large power yachts were progressed to a high degree, and long-distance sailing was a favourite activity of the rich. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to boats powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht archetype for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were solely power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.
From the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. In particular within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service during World War II.
As larger and better quality internal-combustion engines were produced, many big yachts began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed for World War I. In the decade after, big power-yacht building blossomed, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the best auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The building of large power craft fell away after 1932, and the trend thereafter was for smaller, less expensive yachts. From World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting is a globally loved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually owning and upkeeping their own small leisure yachts. The popularity of yachts and owners increased steadily, not only in the traditional places on the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes are categorized by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that puts the same relative onus on all taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income move in the same levels. A progressive tax is recognisable by a larger than proportional growth in the tax onus in regard to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional rise in the related burden. Therefore, progressive taxes are seen as taking away inequalities in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are found to result in increasing these inequalities.
The taxes that are usually thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are initially progressive, however, can become less so in the upper-income demographic—especially if a taxpayer is allowed to lower his tax base by claiming deductions or by removing particular income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income groups can also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are declared.
Income measured over the course of a given year does not absolutely give the most accurate measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory growth in income may be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer could decide to finance consumption by decreasing savings. So, if taxation is held in comparison along with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than if compared with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (except luxuries) are usually regressive, because the share of personal income consumed or spent for a specific good lessens as the level of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a set amount per capita, patently are regressive.
It is not simple to dictate corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to the lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden rests for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.
In analysing the economic purposes of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between various concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates include those specified in the law; generally these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income increases by one dollar. Ergo, if tax onus grows by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income rises. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates must take into account provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lowers by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than indicated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, as it may rely on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates signify the percentage of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates generally grow with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households might dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decline as income increases.
