The most common question customers ask when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and models available, it can be challenging for customers to make a choice between the two technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors provide far better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing a comparable level of image quality.
Think of a set of blinds in your household over your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel functions like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from when the projector turns on to when the picture reaches your screen is extremely important in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something important to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your wall at the same time. The way a DLP projector operates is vastly different and even how an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is directed through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of forming an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then draw each coloured element of the image into a total image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer high brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have added a white segment for the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this further damages colour accuracy.
I read in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior. For those who are unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is able to produce. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be a plus, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is used. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you want to see has moving images, DLP projection technology also has image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this problem because every colour is processed simultaneously. DLP designers have formed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up artifacts, but the price tag of these projectors make them impractical for many businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how different colours of light refract differing amounts when directed through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in different ways. Most of the time with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will come up above and an extra blue will appear below an image containing something as simple as a lone black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to minimize these effects on the projected image, as each colour is directed on a separate LCD panels.
The sole actual plus (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant to mobility and needs to be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 bet. Yachting was found to be fashionable for the wealthy and royalty, but after that period the fashion did not last.
The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and held much naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after conglomerating with other organisations, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing began in some stipulated manner on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual setting of British yacht racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the rise of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great bets were held, and the social life was splendid. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English gained control. Sailing was largely for leisure and reached its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and set a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts followed the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the later half of the 19th century. The craft of large yachts was initially greatly affected by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a association headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and crafted in a contemporary sense, with merely a model used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the study of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what it had previously done for hulls.
Because most of all sailboats had been individually custom-built, there was a desire for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were made. Hence, a rating rule came into being, which is found in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and edited in 1919. In modern times, one of the most rapidly growing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to the same dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for these boats can be held on an even par with no handicapping necessary. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
For the time that yachting was an activity largely for the nobility and the affluent, expense was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller yachts occurred in the latter half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of small boats. Later in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and recreational yachts became more common, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, in which steam was set to emulate sail power in commercial craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were favoured increasingly in personal craft. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high element, and long-distance cruising turned into a favourite activity of the wealthy. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave way to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for several years. By the later half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.
During the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the manufacture of large steam yachts. Notably among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service in World War II.
As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were produced, many large boats began using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, advanced in World War I. In the decade following, large power-yacht creation grew, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that period the largest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The manufacture of large power yachts declined after 1932, and the fashion from then was in preference of smaller, less expensive yachts. Following World War II, many small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting has become a internationally popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally manning and maintaining their own small recreational craft. The popularity of yachts and yachtsmen is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional places along the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes are distinguished by the impact they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that puts the same relative onus on all taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income increase in the same proportion. A progressive tax is recognisable by a more than proportional rise in the tax onus in regard to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional rise in the relative burden. Therefore, progressive taxes are thought of as fighting inequalities in income distribution, but regressive taxes can have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.
The taxes that are usually thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are initially progressive, however, may become less so for the upper-income group—especially if a taxpayer is allowed to reduce his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding some certain income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income classes could also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are declared.
Income measured over the period of a given year does not absolutely give the most suitable measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory growth in income can be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer may decide to provide for consumption by reducing savings. Ergo, if taxation is regarded along with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is made comparable with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (excepting luxuries) tend to be regressive, because the spread of one’s income consumed or spent for specific goods declines as the rate of personal income increases. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a fixed amount per capita, patently are regressive.
It is hard to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to uncertainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden is dependant fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.
In assessing the economic effects of taxation, it is relevant to distinguish between varied ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are those dictated in the law; generally these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Hence, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates should take into account provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lowers by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than nominated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to realise the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, since it may be dependant on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates determine the portion of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually grow with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households can swamp these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that lessen as income rises.
