There is only one way to avoid this from happening and that is to set up a style guide. Not only will a style guide aid you control the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you strengthen your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most common question that is asked when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and models available, it can be challenging for the buyer to decide between the two technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors give superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will explain why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing a similar rate of image quality.

Think of a set of blinds in your house on your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. And such is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel operates like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector is turned on to when the picture reaches your screen is absolutely significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to send the projector image. Something to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projector screen simultaneously. The way a DLP projector works is widely different and even the final product of how an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of projecting an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then draw each coloured element of the image into a single full image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create top brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at any given time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have included a white segment into the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this further damages colour accuracy.

I hear in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior. For those who are unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications when compared to many LCD projectors. Initially, this must be an advantage, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is being used. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you plan to view has moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all colours are delivered at the same time. DLP designers have formed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the expense of these projectors make them hardly practical for most businesses and consumers.

Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how the different colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light in different ways. Usually with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will come through above and a spill of blue will come through below an image of something as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be set to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on its own LCD panels.

The only veritable benefit (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to portability and must be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is vital to you, then the decision is no-brainer. Take an LCD projector! LCD projectors will constantly produce bright, colourful images with fewer image mistakes. On his reaffirmation to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 bet. Yachting became fashionable for the rich and aristocracy, but after that point the fashion did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held large naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club endured, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when merging with other societies, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some organized fashion on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to the throne in 1820, it was then called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued location of British yachting. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. All members were required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large stakes were held, and the society life was splendid. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English took control. Sailing was largely for pleasure and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the latter half of the 19th century. The style of bigger yachts was initially heavily impacted by the win of America, which was designed by George Steers for a group led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and manufactured in a contemporary sense, with only a model for an outline. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the use of the science of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what such study had previously done for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had been individually manufactured, there arose a requirement for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were built. Thus, a rating rule came into being, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and edited in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly flourishing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be done on an even par with no handicapping necessary. A perfect example is the standard International America’s Cup Class adopted for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting was an activity largely for the nobility and the rich, money was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller craft occurred in the later half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the hardiness of less sizeable craft. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, when steam began to replace sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were favoured increasingly in pleasure boats. Sizeable power yachts were furthered to a high element, and long-distance cruising turned into a favourite pastime of the affluent. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave way to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service during World War II.

As more sizeable and better quality internal-combustion engines were developed, many bigger boats were using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed from World War I. During the decade after that, big power-yacht manufacture grew, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that point the largest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of larger power craft lessened after 1932, and the fashion thereafter was in preference of smaller, less pricey yachts. After World War II, a lot of small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be categorized by the impact they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that applies the same relative onus on each taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income increase in relative proportion. A progressive tax is recognised by a greater than proportional increase in the tax burden in relation to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional increase in the comparable onus. Thus, progressive taxes are regarded as fighting the lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes might have the effect of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are initially progressive, however, could become less so within the upper-income categories—in particular if a taxpayer is permitted to lower his tax base by claiming deductions or by removing certain income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income groups could also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are claimed.

Income measured over the period of a year might not absolutely come up with the best measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory rises in income could be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might opt to finance consumption by decreasing savings. Therefore, if taxation is regarded along with “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of luxuries) are generally regressive, because the dissemination of personal income consumed or spent on a specific good lowers as the amount of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), nominated as a fixed amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is not simple to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to the uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden depends essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In regarding the economic effect of taxation, it is essential to differentiate between several ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are those dictated in the legislation; often these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Ergo, if tax liability grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may be dependant on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates determine the part of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally rise with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households may dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that fall as income increases.
