The typical question customers ask when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and different types available, it can be challenging for clients to make a decision between both technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors have superior image quality and colour accuracy. The article below explains why DLP projectors struggle with projecting a comparable rate of image quality.
It’s like a set of blinds in your house for your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. Such is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel operates like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from when the projector switches on to when the image reaches your screen is ultimately significant in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to create the projector image. A point to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your projector screen simultaneously. The way a DLP projector works is totally different and even the way an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of creating an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a whole image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the highest brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have placed a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this then detracts from colour accuracy.
I hear in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and thus must be better quality. For those who do not know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications compared to most LCD projectors. At one glance, this must be a benefit, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is in use. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you are trying to view includes moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this problem because all the colours are projected simultaneously. DLP manufacturers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the cost of these projectors make them almost impossible for most businesses and consumers.
Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how the different colours of light refract various amounts when passing through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light at different levels. Often with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will come through above and some blue will show below an image of something as simple as a single black line. In building LCD projectors can be set to reduce these effects on the projected image, as each colour is directed on its own LCD panels.
The only real benefit (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to transport and must be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is important to you, then the decision is a no-brainer. Take an LCD projector! LCD projectors will consistently create bright, colourful images with fewer image mistakes. As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a pleasure craft used first by royalty and later by the burghers for the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yachting was found to be fashionable among the wealthy and aristocracy, but after that time the habit did not last.
The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, with great naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other organisations, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing began in some organized manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to monarchy in 1820, it came to be called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing location of British racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. All members were required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for large stakes were held, and the club life was superlative. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to more than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English had control. Sailing was for the most part for pleasure and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and set a benchmark of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts followed the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the later half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was initially greatly put upon by the success of America, which was designed by George Steers for a association started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its win at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and manufactured in today’s sense, with just a model used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the application of the study of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what science had done earlier for hulls.
Because nearly all sailboats had been individually custom-built, there was a desire for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were made. Therefore, a rating rule was created, which ended up in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and edited in 1919. Today, one of the fastest blossoming areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to the same requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between these boats can be done on an even keel with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
For the time that yachting belonged primarily for the nobility and the wealthy, expense was no problem, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The promotion and preference of smaller boats came in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the seaworthiness of less sizeable boats. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and recreational boats became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, in which steam began to emulate sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly used in personal craft. Bigger power yachts were developed to a high element, and long-distance sailing became a fond occupation of the affluent. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then made way to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were solely power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.
From the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service for World War II.
As bigger and better quality internal-combustion engines were produced, many bigger yachts began using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. From the decade following, large power-yacht creation grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that point the largest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The manufacture of bigger power boats lessened from 1932, and the style after that was for smaller, less pricey craft. Following World War II, lots of small naval craft were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting is a widespread popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually manning and upkeeping their own small recreational craft. The amount of yachts and sailors has increased steadily, not only in the traditional places on the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes can be distinguished by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that imposes the same relative burden on every taxpayer—i.e., when tax liability and income move in equal proportion. A progressive tax is characterized by a larger than proportional increase in the tax liability in regard to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional rise in the related burden. So, progressive taxes are seen as fighting inequity in income distribution, but regressive taxes are believed to have the result of increasing these inequalities.
The taxes that are often believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, could become less so for the upper-income class—in particular if a taxpayer is permitted to reduce his tax base by nominating deductions or by removing particular income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income classes would also be more progressive if personal exemptions are declared.
Income measured over a given period may not definitely come up with the best measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory rises in income could be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer might choose to finance consumption by reducing savings. Therefore, if taxation is held in comparison along with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is held in comparison with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are usually regressive, because the share of one’s income consumed or spent for specific goods decreases as the rate of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also called head taxes), nominated as a set amount per capita, clearly are regressive.
It is not easy to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden rests crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.
In analysing the economic purpose of taxation, it is important to differentiate between differing ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates include those specified in the law; often these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Hence, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income rises. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates need to regard provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than nominated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to understand the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, since it may be dependant on such factors as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates signify the percentage of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates generally rise with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households may swamp these effects, producing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that decline as income increases.
