The most common question that is asked when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many company brands and different types available, it can be overwhelming for clients to make a choice between those technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors provide better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article tells you why DLP projectors struggle with creating a similar rate of image quality.
Visualise a set of blinds in your room on your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel works like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from when the projector is switched on to when the image reaches your screen is absolutely important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to send the projector image. A point to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projector screen all at once. The way a DLP projector runs is totally different and even the way an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to forming an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then pull together each coloured element of the image into the single full image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the best brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP manufacturers have included a white segment into the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this then lessens colour accuracy.
I hear in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be superior quality. For those who don’t know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications as compared to many LCD projectors. At one glance, this appears to be a plus, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is utilised. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you want to bring to life includes moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because the colours are sent at once. DLP designers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to fix the colour break up artifacts, but the cost of these projectors make them impractical for most businesses and consumers.
Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how different colours of light refract various amounts when directed through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light differently. Generally with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will come up above and some blue will come through below something as simple as a straight black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be fixed to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on isolated LCD panels.
The only true buy point (excluding price) with deciding on a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to transporting the device and cannot be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. As the Dutch rose to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a leisure craft used initially by royalty and later by the burghers in the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, arising as private games. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), made more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 wager. Yachting rose as popular for the rich and royalty, but after that period the fashion did not last.
The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and had large naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other organisations, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing was seen in some organized fashion on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to the throne in 1820, it came to be called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued setting of British racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the ascension of George IV. Every member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great stakes were held, and the society life was wonderful. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to over 350 tons.
In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English held control. Sailing was largely for fun and reached its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and created a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts were within the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the latter half of the 19th century. The design of sizeable yachts was initially greatly put upon by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its success at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in the modern sense, with only a model used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what such study had done earlier for hulls.
Because almost all sailboats had been individually manufactured, there came a requirement for handicapping boats previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Hence, a rating rule was created, which ended up in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and edited in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly growing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to standard requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for these boats can be had on an even basis with no handicapping required. A prime example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
For the time that yachting belonged primarily for the nobility and the wealthy, expense was no issue, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The rise and preference of smaller craft came in the second half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the value of less sizeable craft. Following this in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure boats became more popular, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, when steam started to emulate sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in pleasure yachts. Large power yachts were furthered to a high element, and long-distance cruising turned into a favourite pastime of the rich. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave way to yachts powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for many years. By the second half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were solely power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.
In the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of bigger steam yachts. In particular among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service in World War II.
As larger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were developed, many large craft began using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, was furthered during World War I. During the decade following, bigger power-yacht manufacture blossomed, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that time the largest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The building of large power boats lessened after 1932, and the trend after that was toward smaller, less costly yachts. From World War II, lots of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting has become a widespread popular competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually sailing and upkeeping their own small recreational boats. Taxes can be distinguished by the impact they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that places the same relative liability on all the taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income move in the same proportion. A progressive tax is recognised by a larger than proportional rise in the tax onus relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional increase in the comparable burden. Hence, progressive taxes are regarded as reducing inequity in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are found to result in an increase these inequalities.
The taxes that are normally regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, could become less so for the upper-income demographic—in particular if a taxpayer is able to lower his tax base by declaring deductions or by excluding some particular income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income classes would also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are claimed.
Income measured over a given period may not absolutely offer the most suitable measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory rises in income might be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer may choose to finance consumption by reducing savings. So, if taxation is compared with “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is held in comparison with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (save luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the dissemination of individual income consumed or spent on specific goods declines as the level of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also called head taxes), levied as a standard amount per capita, obviously are regressive.
It is complicated to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to uncertainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden is dependant crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being determined.
In assessing the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between several concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates are nominated in the legislation; often these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Thus, if tax burden grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates need to review provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) declines by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than specified within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, because it may be reliant on such factors as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates display the portion of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually increase with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households may dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decline as income rises.

The LCDs put for projection systems are usually small reflective or transmissive panels lit by a strong arc lamp source. A line of lenses enlarges the reflected or transmitted image then sends it on a screen. With front-projection systems the LCD is placed on the side of the screen as the viewer, however in rear-projection systems the screen is illuminated from behind. Projectors of higher cost and capacity sometimes be found with three distinct LCD panels, forming separate red, green, and blue images that blend to reflect a coloured display on the screen.
The increase in demand for pictographic presentations has had a growing emphasis on the switching speed of liquid crystals. This has led to the invention of devices build with smectic liquid crystals, some of which give a faster electro-optical response than nematic liquid crystals. The surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) display is at this point the most developed smectic device. Inside it the liquid crystal molecules are managed in perpendicular layers to the substrate planes, which are separated by one or two micrometres, and in the layers the molecules are slanted, as demonstrated in the figure. The host liquid crystal possesses optically active molecules, and a scarcely perceptible turn up of the optical activity and the shape of the molecules is the appearance of a permanent charge separation, or ferroelectric dipole, comparable to the ferromagnetic dipole of a magnet. The direction of this dipole is perpendicular to the tilt direction of the molecules and within the plane of the layers. Hence, there must be a permanent charge separation throughout the liquid crystal layer in the SSFLC, and its sign is directly attracted to the tilt direction of the molecules. An applied voltage of the corresponding sign can reverse the direction of this dipole in tens of microseconds and by doing so reverse the tilt direction of the molecules. The respective change in optical properties can make a change from light to dark if one or more polarizers are employed.
SSFLC devices have been publicized for bigger passive-matrix displays, but their cost and detail has hindered them from creating any particular progress on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, show some possibility for use as aspects in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their quick reaction allows them to be employed in time-sequential colour systems, in which high cost colour filters are taken out for a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in rapid pulsing (approximately 100 cycles a second). Egypt
Two ancient Egyptian chair forms, both the structures of careful make, are today known from tomb discoveries. One of them is a four-legged chair with a back, the other a folding stool. The iconic Egyptian chair would have had four legs shaped not unlike those of an animal, a curved seat, and leading to a sloping back supported from vertical stretchers. In this way a solid triangular design was created. There appears to be no particular differentiation between the creation of Egyptian thrones and chairs for typical non-royals. The real change exists in the intricacy of its ornamentation, in the evidence of pricey inlays. The Egyptian folding stool in all likelihood was developed as an easily packed seat for army officers. As a camp stool the type persisted for much later times. But the stool then was designed as the task of a ceremonial seat, its technical task as a folding stool neglected or forgotten. This can from evidence be noted, from as early as 1366–57 BC in two stools, executed in ebony with ivory inlay work and gold mounts, from the tomb of Tutankhamen. They are made in the shape of folding stools but cannot be folded because the seats are made from wood. The simplistic build of the folding stool, made of two frames that spin on metal bolts and have a seat of leather or fabric held between them, was then seen but some time later during the Bronze Age folding chairs of Scandinavia and northern Germany. The most well known of this type is the folding stool, made from ashwood, which is now seen at Guldhøj (National Museum in Copenhagen).
Greece and Rome
The archetypal Greek chair, the klismos, is recognised not in any ancient specimen still around but seen in a trove of pictorial items. The archetype is the klismos drawn on the Hegeso Stele at the Dipylon burial location just out of Athens (c. 410 BC). This klismos is a chair with a backward-sloping, curved backboard and four curving legs, only two of which are seen. These unusual legs were presumed to be executed out of bent wood and were therefore put under great pressure with the weight of the sitter. The joints holding the legs to the frame of the seat are therefore super solid and were visibly drawn.
The Romans embued the Greek designs; evidence of models of seated Romans display chairs of a heavier and are a somewhat less intricately constructed klismos. Both kinds, light or heavy, were revived in the Classicist era. The klismos chair is used in French Empire chairs, in English Regency, and in some special brands of notable individuality in Denmark and Sweden circa 1800.
China
The ancestry of the chair in China can not be charted as far as that of Egypt and Greece. Since the time of the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) an unscathed collection of drawings and paintings has been kept, with images of the interiors and exterior of Chinese households and the furniture. Preserved also from the 16th century are some chairs crafted from wood or lacquered wood, that bear an intriguing familiarity to images of older chairs.
Like in Egypt, two chair forms persisted in China: a chair of four legs and a folding stool. This chair was constructed both with or without arms but never missing its square seat and straight stiles (vertical side supports) to firm the back. In one kind, however, the stiles had been delicately curved by the arms to sit right with the angle of the S-shaped back splat (the main upright of a chairback). Together, the three limbs had been mortised on the yoke-like top rail. Despite that the idea of the Chinese back splat had an inspiration for English chairs within the Queen Anne period, wooden pieces that merely to a particular capability embolden corner joints (as well as being loose in the bargain) are a feature exclusive to Chinese chairs. The four legs pass through the seat frame, which stops upon the rounded staves. Every member is round in section or have rounded edges—referable perchance to the bamboo tradition. The seat is not pleasant and occasionally had a plaited seat. These chairs needed the sitter to be stiff and upright; if too much pressure is forced on the back, the chair has a tendency to fall. In patriarchal Chinese households of this epoch armchairs likely were reserved for the senior persons, for they were respected greatly.
The Chinese folding stool is understood to have been brought to China from the West. It does not differ much from the Egyptian and Scandinavian folding stools, but it has a variation in that the top rail is intricately joined to the two legs of the stool by use of a curved member, which is generally provided with metal mounts. From a Western point of view the resultant effect of both of these furniture designs is stylized. The manufacture and aesthetic issues are combined in a style that is both naïve and refined. The patched up appearance is an upshot of the way that the individual members do not appear to have been held together by use of either glue or screws, but had been mortised into one another and locked into place in the style of a Chinese puzzle.
Spain: 17th century
The Golden Age of Spain during the 17th century also had its mark on the chair. Paintings display a type of chair with a relatively crude wooden frame; a back and seat, nailed on, with two layers of leather, with horsehair stuffing in between, stitched to bring out a pattern of small pads. The front board and a corresponding board in the back could be folded after unscrewing some small iron hooks. Therefore the chair was a portable piece of furniture when traveling which, in the same era, gave the dignity of a four-legged, high-backed armchair.
The Netherlands: 17th century
A low, square, upholstered style of chair is evidenced in engravings of the interior of wealthy Dutch homes by Abraham Bosse, a French artist, as well as in paintings by the Dutch artists Johannes Vermeer and Gerard Terborch. While this style of chair may also be made in countries where Dutch styles of interior decoration and Dutch furniture won preference, it is not certain that the style actually began in The Netherlands. Normally, the legs of the chair were smooth, round in section, and of thin dimensions; they are occasionally baluster-shaped (vase-shaped) or twisted. It is patently a bourgeois piece of furniture and was produced in vast amounts, as indicated from one of Abraham Bosse’s engravings, in which there is a row of these chairs lined up against a wall. The design asserts itself by virtue of its shapely proportions and delicate upholstery in gilt leather or fabric bordered with fringes.
France and England: 17th and 18th centuries
The French Rococo chair in its most mature form—that is, as brought out in Paris around 1750—disseminated over most of Europe and has been imitated or copied in the mid-20th century. The model owes the popularity to a combination of comfort and elegance. The seat suits to the human body and permits a relaxed sitting position. The back is bow-shaped, the legs curved. Normally the seat and back are upholstered, and there are small upholstered pads on the armrests. Smooth transitions are achieved between seat frame, legs, and back cover all the joints, which are constructed strongly on craftsmanlike methods in spite of the absence of stretchers between the legs.
French Rococo chairs and imitations thereof use wood of relatively thick measurements; but all the members are deeply molded, all extraneous wood has been cut away, and finer chairs can be further embellished with highly delicate and decorative carving. The wood could be varnished, stained, painted, or gilded. Silk damask or tapestry is used for all upholstery on the seat, back, and armrests; cane is in some cases used rather than upholstery.
English chairs in the 18th century were more variable in style than the French. The French touch for stylistic uniformity, which lead from the royal circles in Paris and Versailles through most of France and was popularised in many parts of the Continent, had no parallel in England. Prior to 1740, the most commonly used wood was walnut; thereafter, and for the rest of the century, it was mahogany. Walnut, though beautiful in hue, was soft and therefore less suited to wood carving than to rounded, curving forms. Outer surfaces, such as the back and seat frame, were usually veneered. During the walnut period, highly overstuffed armchairs, covered with leather or embroidered material, were also developed. The best upholstery of this period is precisely and firmly modelled and accentuated by braiding or tacks. When imports of mahogany became common, no specifically new chair designs appeared, but the character of the woodwork changed. Mahogany, having a firmer, closer grain, could be cut thinner, which meant that individual parts of the chair could be more slender in shape. Mahogany also lent itself better to carving than walnut. Carving was concentrated more on the arms and back than on the legs, which as a rule were straight and smooth with chamfered (bevelled) edges and molding. There was a wealth of variety in chairback designs, featuring elegant, pierced, vase-shaped splats or two upright posts connected by horizontal slats (ladderback).
Alongside the French Rococo chair and the best English chairs in walnut and mahogany, the stick-back chair was relatively unaffected by the stylistic changes of the day. Originally a medieval form, known, for example, from paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and still found in mid-20th century in the churches and inns of southern Europe, the stick-back chair (in all of its variations) consists basically of a solid, saddle-shaped seat into which the legs, back staves, and possibly the armrests are directly mortised. This typically peasant form underwent a renewal and a process of refinement in England and America during the 18th century. Under the name Windsor chair (a term that seems to have been used for the first time in 1731) or Philadelphia chair, it became commonly known and was widely distributed throughout the world.
Late 18th to 20th century
In the Neoclassical period, no basic changes took place in chair forms, but legs became straight and dimensions lighter. Backs in the shape of classical vases replaced the fanciful outlines of the Rococo period. Around 1800, freely executed imitations of Greek and Roman chairs of the klismos type, with curved legs and backrest, appeared. French chairs of the Empire period, executed in dark mahogany and embellished with ornate bronze mounts, created a ponderous effect.
In cheaper products of inferior workmanship, bourgeois chairs of the 19th century carried on the traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The only real innovations were the bentwood (wood that has been bent and shaped) chairs in beech that became popular all over the world and were still made in the 20th century. Around 1900 the continental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles (French and German styles characterized by organic foliate forms, sinuous lines, and non-geometric forms), and the Arts and Crafts movement in England (established by the English poet and decorator William Morris to reintroduce idealized standards of medieval craftsmanship), gave rise to original chair designs by Eugène Gaillard in France, Henry van de Velde in Belgium, Josef Hoffman in Austria, Antonio Gaudí in Spain, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland. These new furniture styles did not exercise wide, let alone decisive, influence. The Art Nouveau chairs designed by the French architect Hector Guimard, for example, are collector’s pieces, but his name is known to a broader public only because of his fanciful entrances to the Paris Métro.
Modern
After World War I, the Bauhaus school in Germany became a creative centre for revolutionary thinking, resulting, for example, in tubular steel chairs designed by the architects Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and others. During World War II, the aircraft industry accelerated the development of laminated wood and molded plastic furniture. The dominant chair forms of this period go back to designs by Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, and Charles and Ray Eames. Rapid technical developments, in conjunction with an ever-increasing interest in human-factors engineering, or ergonomics, purport that completely new chair forms will probably be evolved in the future.

The invention of jet propulsion was ideal for fighter aircraft. Although at first it reduced range and endurance and often increased the take-off run. The German Messerschmitt Me 262 and the British Gloster Meteor twin jets saw action in 1944, together with the tailless Me 163 rocket interceptor which sacrificed range and endurance for astounding climb and speed in defending local areas against heavy bombers.
Germany was far in front of other countries in another factor too: armament. A range of 30 mm (1 inch) cannon, radically new high-speed cannon with multiple-revolver chambers, very large recoilless guns, spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets fired in salvoes, and wire-guided air-to-air missiles were all under test before the Luftwaffe s defeat. They gradually inspired similar developments in other countries: one German gun, the Mauser MG 213, led to the American Pontiac M-39, the French DEFA, the Russian NR-30, the Swiss Oerlikon KCA, and the British Aden, all of which are still in use.
Many early jet fighters were fitted into more or less conventional airframes. The fighter often considered the ultimate achievement of the piston era, the long-range North American P-51 Mustang appeared both in a twinned double-fuselage form and, with few changes, as a US Navy jet.
But the US Air Force decided to wait a year until its makers could sweep back the wings and tail at 35 degrees, which German research had shown could lead to higher speed. The result was the F-86 Sabre, which in 1948 set a speed record at 1,080 km/h (671 mph) and outflew all other fighters. Later versions carried radar and rockets and reached 1,150 km/h (715 mph).
During the Korean War (1950-3) the F-86 met a previously unknown machine built in the Soviet Union, the somewhat lighter and simpler MiG-15, and although the MiG could climb higher and had heavy cannon, the Sabre’s skilled pilots and better equipment gave it the edge in combat.
North American’s next fighter was the F-100 Super Sabre, which exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. The MiG bureau built the twin jet MiG-19, which was even faster, and is still in wide use. The US Air Force ordered various all-weather interceptors with largely automatic radar and flight control systems so that, with guided missiles, they could intercept and destroy enemy aircraft without the pilot ever seeing them.
The British ordered a jet-fighter flying-boat, but discovered that this way of doing business without airfields yielded an inferior fighter. The Americans suffered similar problems with a ‘hydroski’ fighter, which could dive faster than sound, but took off and landed on retractable water skis.
Two even stranger fighters were designed around powerful turboprop engines and, standing on their tails, screwed themselves vertically into the air (they were intended to operate from the confined decks of warships or merchant vessels). Britain built high-altitude supersonic fighters with ‘mixed power’ from a turbojet and a rocket. In 1957 the British Minister of Defence suggested there would soon be no more manned fighters at all, only missiles. The Americans stuck to fighters, but made them very large and armed them with missiles, but no gun.
Today the wheel has turned full circle. In the past 10 to 20 years there has been a powerful trend to get back to the ‘eyeball-to-eyeball’ type of confrontation of the man in the Sopwith Camel. The pre-eminent Western fighter, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, was rebuilt with an internal gun, a rapid-fire 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon with six barrels firing up to 6,000 rds/ min, and a slatted wing to pull tighter turns in combat.
New small fighters appeared, such as the General Dynamics F-16, which, although bigger and heavier than any single-engined fighters of World War II, are nevertheless small and light by comparison with such impressive machines as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and MiG-25 Foxbat, The RAF’s next interceptor, the ADV (Air-Defence Version) of the Panavia Tornado, is a careful midway compromise, smaller than the three monsters just listed, but with two engines, long range, powerful radar, and extremely effective Skyflash missiles.
Modern interceptors defend vast blocks of airspace up to 160 km (100 miles) in radius, with powerful radar able to look down at the surrounding land and water and spot low-flying intruders trying to slip through the defences unnoticed.
