The most common question that is asked when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and models available, it can be difficult for the buyer to pick between the two technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors have far better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing an equal standard of image quality.
Visualise a set of blinds in your household covering your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel operates like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as professionals like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the time the projector is turned on to when the image reaches your screen is extremely important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to send the projector image. Something to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your wall all at the same time. The way a DLP projector functions is very different and even the produced image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to making an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then draw each coloured element of the image into a single complete image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver the top level of brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have placed a white segment in the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this then degrades colour accuracy.
I find in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be better quality. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of producing. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications when compared to many LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be a plus, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is in use. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you are trying to project has moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all colours are projected at the same time. DLP manufacturers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up issue, but the price of these projectors make them hardly practical for many businesses and consumers.
Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember how the various colours of light refract different amounts when shone through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light at different levels. Generally with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will be projected above and a spill of blue will appear below something as simple as a straight black line. In building LCD projectors can be set to minimize these effects on the projected image, as each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.
The isolated actual plus (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to transport and has to be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. As the Dutch found dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht became a pleasure craft used mostly by royalty and then by the burghers for the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, arising as private challenges. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), made other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 punt. Yachting was found to be fashionable for the wealthy and aristocracy, but after that time the fashion did not last.
The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held much naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when conglomerating with other organisations, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing began in some stipulated manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to monarchy in 1820, it was named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued location of British racing. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the ascension of George IV. All members were required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large bids were held, and the society life was wonderful. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to bigger than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English held dominance. Sailing was largely for fun and found its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and created a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the second half of the 19th century. The design of sizeable yachts was initially largely impacted by the victory of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a group headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its victory at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and manufactured in the modern sense, with merely a model being used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what such study had previously done for hulls.
Because almost all sailboats had to be individually manufactured, there came a requirement for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were built. Thus, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and revised in 1919. In modern times, one of the most rapidly growing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to standard dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for these boats can be held on an even par with no handicapping at all. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
As long as yachting belonged primarily for the royal and the wealthy, expense was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The rise and desire of smaller boats happened in the later half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the hardiness of smaller craft. Following this in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure yachts became more common, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, when steam started to replace sail power in public boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in personal boats. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high element, and long-distance cruising was a favourite pastime of the rich. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave rise to those powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were exclusively power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.
From the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. In particular of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service during World War II.
As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many large boats were using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed from World War I. From the decade following, large power-yacht creation grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that time the largest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The construction of large power craft declined in 1932, and the trend thereafter was in preference of smaller, less pricey boats. From World War II, lots of small naval craft were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting has become a widespread beloved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually sailing and upkeeping their own small pleasure craft. The number of craft and sailors has increased steadily, not only in the traditional places by the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes are categorized by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that places the same relative requirement on all the taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income move in the same proportion. A progressive tax is recognised by a higher than proportional rise in the tax liability relative to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the relative liability. Thus, progressive taxes are regarded as taking away inequalities in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are believed to increase these inequalities.
The taxes that are generally believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, might become less so within the upper-income demographic—particularly if a taxpayer is permitted to lower his tax base by declaring deductions or by removing particular income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income groups could also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are claimed.
Income measured over a given period might not definitely offer the most accurate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory increases in income can be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might choose to provide for consumption by decreasing savings. Thus, if taxation is made comparable alongside “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is made comparable with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of luxuries) are generally regressive, because the spread of individual income consumed or spent for a specific good declines as the level of personal income is raised. In analysing the economic purposes of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between various points of tax rates. The statutory rates include those nominated in the law; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Thus, if tax liability grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income rises. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates need to take into account provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to understand the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, since it may be reliant on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem determines that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates determine the portion of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates commonly rise with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households could swamp these effects, allowing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that fall as income rises.

The LCDs built for projection systems are typically small reflective or transmissive panels illuminated by a powerful arc lamp source. A line of lenses expands the reflected or transmitted image then displays it on the screen. For front-projection systems the LCD is situated on the same side of the screen as the viewer, but in rear-projection systems the screen is illuminated from behind. Projectors of greater expense and capability may use three separated LCD panels, reflecting separate red, green, and blue images that come together to form a coloured display on the screen.
The growing need for pictographic presentations has had a growing emphasis on the switching speed of liquid crystals. This has required the development of objects employing smectic liquid crystals, certain kinds of which have a quicker electro-optical response than nematic liquid crystals. The surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) display is at this time the most sophisticated smectic device. With it the liquid crystal molecules are managed in perpendicular layers to the substrate planes, which are separated by one or two micrometres, and in the layers the molecules are on a slant, as shown in the figure. The host liquid crystal contains optically active molecules, and a slight outcome of the optical activity and the angle of the molecules is the presence of a permanent charge separation, or ferroelectric dipole, similar to the ferromagnetic dipole of a magnet. An applied voltage of the correct sign can reverse the direction of this dipole in tens of microseconds and in so doing reverse the tilt direction of the molecules. The respective change in optical properties can create a change from light to dark if one or more polarizers are utilised.
SSFLC devices have been produced for large passive-matrix displays, but their expense and complexity has stopped them from making any significant impact on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, have some promise for use as aspects in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their quick response allows them to be employed in time-sequential colour systems, in which highly expensive colour filters are replaced by a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in rapid pulsing (around 100 cycles per second). For example, the liquid crystal might be switched to a transmissive state in the red and green periods but to a nontransmissive state for the blue period, having the upshot that the eye sees an average of red and green light, or the colour yellow.

Of all furniture pieces, the chair could be the most imperative. While most other pieces (except the bed) are created to support objects, the chair supports a human form. The main difference exists in the decorative ornamentation, in the selection of costly inlays. The Egyptian folding stool most likely was manufactured as an easily portable seat for army soldiers. As a camp stool this form persisted for much later periods of time. But the stool also was made as the purpose of a ceremonial seat, its technical job as a folding stool neglected or forgotten. This can from today’s evidence be found, from as early as 1366–57 BC in two stools, executed in ebony with ivory inlay ornamentation and gold mounts, from the tomb of Tutankhamen. They were constructed in the structure of folding stools but cannot be folded because the seats are worked of wood. The plain build of the folding stool, being of two frames that turn on metal bolts and hold a seat of leather or fabric set between them, is seen again at some time later in the Bronze Age folding chairs of Scandinavia and northern Germany. Greece and Rome
The archetypal Greek chair, the klismos, is found not as any ancient object still existing but as seen in a wealth of pictorial material. The better known is the klismos placed on the Hegeso Stele at the Dipylon burial area just out of Athens (c. 410 BC). This klismos is a chair that had a backward-sloping, curved backboard and four curving legs, but only two of those legs were displayed. These odd legs were thought to have been crafted out of bent wood and were thus had to bear a large amount of pressure under the weight of the sitter. The joints securing the legs to the frame of the seat were therefore extremely solid and were particularly denoted.
The Romans embued the Greek chair; quite a few casts of seated Romans display designs of a denser and in appearance slightly crudely designed klismos. Both designs, the light and the heavy, were popularised as part of the Classicist era. The klismos influence is seen in French Empire design, in English Regency, and in some special types of notable iconicism within Denmark and Sweden around 1800.
China
The ancestry of the chair in China is not able to be followed as far as chairs in Egypt and Greece. From the time of the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) a full folio of sketches and artworks has been protected, detailing the interior and outside of Chinese houses and the kinds of furniture. Also preserved from the 16th century are a trove of chairs of wood or lacquered wood, that hold an amazing likeness to images of previous chairs.
Just as in Egypt, two iconic chair forms existed in China: a chair having four legs and a folding stool. This four-legged chair has been seen both with or without arms although always having the square seat and straight stiles (upright side supports) to give support to the back. In one style, it has been found, the stiles were slightly curved on top of the arms so as to suit the structure of the S-shaped back splat (the centre upright of the chairback). All three areas had been mortised into the yoke-like top rail. While the design of this back splat then had an introduction for English chairs in the Queen Anne period, wooden sections that just to a restricted extent reinforce corner joints (and then are loose into the bargain) signify a design particular to Chinese chairs. The four legs are set through the seat frame, which ends upon the rounded staves. All the members are round in section or has rounded edges—references perhaps to the bamboo tradition. The seat is uncomfortable and may have had a plaited texture. These chairs required the sitter to remain stiff and upright; if too much pressure is pushed on the back, the chair has a tendency to topple over. In patriarchal Chinese homes of this era armchairs most likely were reserved for the senior individuals in the family, for they were greatly esteemed.
The Chinese folding stool is believed to have taken to China from the West. It does not vary very much from the Egyptian and Scandinavian folding stools, but it has a change in that the top rail is prettily fixed to the two legs of the stool by a curved member, which is usually designed with metal mounts. From a Western viewpoint the ultimate effect of these two furniture styles is stylized. The construction and decoration elements are combined in a manner that is both naïve and refined. The pieced-together appearance is a result of the fact that the individual members do not appear to have been adjoined by either glue or screws, but were mortised onto one another and fixed in its place in the style of a Chinese puzzle.
Spain: 17th century
The Golden Age of Spain during the 17th century also put its mark on the chair. Paintings display a style of chair with a relatively crude wooden frame; a back and seat, nailed on, consisting of two layers of leather, with horsehair stuffing between the layers, stitched to bring up a pattern of tiny pads. The front board and a related board from the back could be folded after unscrewing some tiny iron hooks. In this way the chair was a readily portable piece of furniture in traveling which, during the same era, granted the dignity of a four-legged, high-backed armchair.
The Netherlands: 17th century
A low, square, upholstered style of chair is found in engravings of the interiors of affluent Dutch homes by Abraham Bosse, a French artist, and also in paintings by the Dutch artists Johannes Vermeer and Gerard Terborch. While this design of chair may also be seen in countries in which Dutch styles of interior decoration and Dutch furniture won acclaim, it is not believed that the form actually began in The Netherlands. Normally, the legs of the chair will be smooth, round in section, and of thin measurements; they are in some cases baluster-shaped (vase-shaped) or twisted. It is obviously a bourgeois piece of furniture and was produced in considerable amounts, as evidenced from one of Abraham Bosse’s engravings, in which a whole row of these chairs lined up along a wall. The design asserts itself with its elegant proportions and delicate upholstery in gilt leather or fabric edged with fringes.
France and England: 17th and 18th centuries
The French Rococo chair in its most mature style—that is, as developed in Paris around 1750—spread through most of Europe and has been imitated or copied into the mid-20th century. The chair owes such popularity to a combination of relaxation and elegance. The seat adheres to the human body and permits a relaxed sitting position. The back is bow-shaped, the legs curved. Typically the seat and back are upholstered, and there are little upholstered pads covering the armrests. Smooth transitions achieved between seat frame, legs, and back conceal all the joints, which are constructed strongly on craftsmanlike principles despite the absence of stretchers between the legs.
French Rococo chairs and imitations of those are constructed from wood of fairly thick measurements; but all members are deeply molded, all extra wood has been sanded away, and more upmarket examples can be further embellished with intricately delicate and decorative engraving. The wood can be varnished, stained, painted, or gilded. Silk damask or tapestry should be used for all the upholstery on the seat, back, and armrests; cane is occasionally used in place of upholstery.
English chairs from the 18th century were more differentiated in style than the French. The French touch for stylistic uniformity, which spread from the aristocratic circles in Paris and Versailles through most of France and was popularised in large parts of the Continent, had no parallel in England. Prior to 1740, the most commonly used wood was walnut; thereafter, and for the rest of the century, it was mahogany. Walnut, though beautiful in hue, was soft and therefore less suited to wood carving than to rounded, curving forms. Outer surfaces, such as the back and seat frame, were usually veneered. During the walnut period, highly overstuffed armchairs, covered with leather or embroidered material, were also developed. The best upholstery of this period is precisely and firmly modelled and accentuated by braiding or tacks. When imports of mahogany became common, no specifically new chair designs appeared, but the character of the woodwork changed. Mahogany, having a firmer, closer grain, could be cut thinner, which meant that individual parts of the chair could be more slender in shape. Mahogany also lent itself better to carving than walnut. Carving was concentrated more on the arms and back than on the legs, which as a rule were straight and smooth with chamfered (bevelled) edges and molding. There was a wealth of variety in chairback designs, featuring elegant, pierced, vase-shaped splats or two upright posts connected by horizontal slats (ladderback).
Alongside the French Rococo chair and the best English chairs in walnut and mahogany, the stick-back chair was relatively unaffected by the stylistic changes of the day. Originally a medieval form, known, for example, from paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and still found in mid-20th century in the churches and inns of southern Europe, the stick-back chair (in all of its variations) consists basically of a solid, saddle-shaped seat into which the legs, back staves, and possibly the armrests are directly mortised. This typically peasant form underwent a renewal and a process of refinement in England and America during the 18th century. Under the name Windsor chair (a term that seems to have been used for the first time in 1731) or Philadelphia chair, it became popular and was widely distributed throughout the world.
Late 18th to 20th century
Within the Neoclassical period, no basic changes took place in chair forms, but legs became straight and dimensions lighter. Backs in the shape of classical vases replaced the fanciful outlines of the Rococo period. Around 1800, freely executed imitations of Greek and Roman chairs of the klismos type, with curved legs and backrest, appeared. French chairs of the Empire period, executed in dark mahogany and embellished with ornate bronze mounts, created a ponderous effect.
In cheaper versions of inferior workmanship, bourgeois chairs of the 19th century carried on the traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The only real innovations were the bentwood (wood that has been bent and shaped) chairs in beech that became popular all over the world and were still made in the 20th century. Around 1900 the continental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles (French and German styles characterized by organic foliate forms, sinuous lines, and non-geometric forms), and the Arts and Crafts movement in England (established by the English poet and decorator William Morris to reintroduce idealized standards of medieval craftsmanship), gave rise to original chair designs by Eugène Gaillard in France, Henry van de Velde in Belgium, Josef Hoffman in Austria, Antonio Gaudí in Spain, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland. These new furniture styles did not exercise wide, let alone decisive, influence. The Art Nouveau chairs designed by the French architect Hector Guimard, for example, are collector’s pieces, but his name is known to a broader public only because of his fanciful entrances to the Paris Métro.
Modern
After World War I, the Bauhaus school in Germany became a creative centre for revolutionary thinking, resulting, for example, in tubular steel chairs designed by the architects Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and others. During World War II, the aircraft industry accelerated the development of laminated wood and molded plastic furniture. The dominant chair forms of this period go back to designs by Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, and Charles and Ray Eames. Rapid technical developments, in conjunction with an ever-increasing interest in human-factors engineering, or ergonomics, purport that completely new chair forms will probably be evolved in the future.

The invention of jet propulsion was ideal for fighter aircraft. Although at first it reduced range and endurance and often increased the take-off run. The German Messerschmitt Me 262 and the British Gloster Meteor twin jets saw action in 1944, together with the tailless Me 163 rocket interceptor which sacrificed range and endurance for astounding climb and speed in defending local areas against heavy bombers.
Germany was far in front of other countries in another factor too: armament. A range of 30 mm (1 inch) cannon, radically new high-speed cannon with multiple-revolver chambers, very large recoilless guns, spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets fired in salvoes, and wire-guided air-to-air missiles were all under test before the Luftwaffe s defeat. They gradually inspired similar developments in other countries: one German gun, the Mauser MG 213, led to the American Pontiac M-39, the French DEFA, the Russian NR-30, the Swiss Oerlikon KCA, and the British Aden, all of which are still in use.
Many early jet fighters were fitted into more or less conventional airframes. The fighter often considered the ultimate achievement of the piston era, the long-range North American P-51 Mustang appeared both in a twinned double-fuselage form and, with few changes, as a US Navy jet.
But the US Air Force decided to wait a year until its makers could sweep back the wings and tail at 35 degrees, which German research had shown could lead to higher speed. The result was the F-86 Sabre, which in 1948 set a speed record at 1,080 km/h (671 mph) and outflew all other fighters. Later versions carried radar and rockets and reached 1,150 km/h (715 mph).
During the Korean War (1950-3) the F-86 met a previously unknown machine built in the Soviet Union, the somewhat lighter and simpler MiG-15, and although the MiG could climb higher and had heavy cannon, the Sabre’s skilled pilots and better equipment gave it the edge in combat.
North American’s next fighter was the F-100 Super Sabre, which exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. The MiG bureau built the twin jet MiG-19, which was even faster, and is still in wide use. The US Air Force ordered various all-weather interceptors with largely automatic radar and flight control systems so that, with guided missiles, they could intercept and destroy enemy aircraft without the pilot ever seeing them.
The British ordered a jet-fighter flying-boat, but discovered that this way of doing business without airfields produced an inferior fighter. The Americans suffered similar problems with a ‘hydroski’ fighter, which could dive faster than sound, but took off and landed on retractable water skis.
Two even stranger fighters were designed around powerful turboprop engines and, standing on their tails, screwed themselves vertically into the air (they were intended to operate from the confined decks of warships or merchant vessels). Britain built high-altitude supersonic fighters with ‘mixed power’ from a turbojet and a rocket. In 1957 the British Minister of Defence suggested there would soon be no more manned fighters at all, only missiles. The Americans stuck to fighters, but made them very large and armed them with missiles, but no gun.
Today the wheel has turned full circle. In the past 10 to 20 years there has been a powerful trend to get back to the ‘eyeball-to-eyeball’ type of confrontation of the man in the Sopwith Camel. The pre-eminent Western fighter, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, was rebuilt with an internal gun, a rapid-fire 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon with six barrels firing up to 6,000 rds/ min, and a slatted wing to pull tighter turns in combat.
New small fighters appeared, such as the General Dynamics F-16, which, although bigger and heavier than any single-engined fighters of World War II, are nevertheless small and light by comparison with such impressive machines as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and MiG-25 Foxbat, The RAF’s next interceptor, the ADV (Air-Defence Version) of the Panavia Tornado, is a careful midway compromise, smaller than the three monsters just listed, but with two engines, long range, powerful radar, and extremely effective Skyflash missiles.
Modern interceptors defend vast blocks of airspace up to 160 km (100 miles) in radius, with powerful radar able to look down at the surrounding land and water and spot low-flying intruders trying to slip through the defences unnoticed. Their task is eased by the presence of special surveillance, early-warning, and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft, with enormous radars and sophisticated command and control systems to manage all a nation’s defences in the most efficient way.
