The common question asked when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many company brands and types available, it can be difficult for consumers to decide between both technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors offer better image quality and colour accuracy. The following article explains why DLP projectors struggle with creating a comparable rate of image quality.
It’s like a set of blinds in your house on your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. Such is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel functions like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the point when the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is extremely important in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to create the projector image. A point to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projector screen at the same time. The way a DLP projector operates is totally different and even how an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is directed through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of projecting an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then draw each coloured element of the image into the total image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver the top level of brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP manufacturers have included a white segment in the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this goes and lessens colour accuracy.
I hear in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and thus must be better. For those who are unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of producing. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications as compared to many LCD projectors. At first glance, this must be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is utilised. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you plan to see has moving images, DLP projection technology also has image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this problem because all colours are sent at the same time. DLP builders have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up problem, but the price of these projectors make them impractical for most businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and remember how the different colours of light refract various amounts when directed through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light differently. Often with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will come up above and some extra blue will be projected below something as simple as a lone black line. While being built LCD projectors can be adapted to reduce these effects on the projected image, as each colour is directed on its own LCD panels.
The sole actual buy point (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant to mobility and must be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. If overall picture quality is crucial to you, then the choice is a no-brainer. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), made more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 punt. Yachting became fashionable among the wealthy and royalty, but after that period the fashion did not last.
The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, with much naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club went on, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other organisations, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing was first seen in some stipulated method on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to the throne in 1820, it came to be called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing location of British yacht racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the accession of George IV. All members were required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for large stakes were held, and the club life was splendid. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to over 350 tons.
In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English held power. Sailing was mostly for fun and rose to its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts were within the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the second half of the 19th century. The design of bigger yachts was initially heavily impacted by the win of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a association headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its win at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and built in the modern sense, with just a model for an outline. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the use of the science of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what science had previously done for hulls.
Because almost all sailboats were individually built, there was a requirement for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were designed. Hence, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and edited in 1919. In the present day, one of the fastest blossoming areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for such boats can be held on an even par with no handicapping at all. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class adopted for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
As long as yachting was an activity primarily for the aristocracy and the affluent, expense was no object, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller boats came in the later half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the seaworthiness of small yachts. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became more popular, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, at which point steam started to emulate sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were used increasingly in pleasure yachts. Bigger power yachts were progressed to a high degree, and long-distance travel turned into a favourite occupation of the rich. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then made way to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were exclusively power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.
During the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the manufacture of bigger steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service during World War II.
As larger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were produced, many bigger boats began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed during World War I. In the decade after, big power-yacht creation flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that period the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The manufacture of large power boats declined in 1932, and the style from then was toward smaller, less pricey craft. After World War II, a lot of small naval craft were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a widespread beloved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually owning and maintaining their own small pleasure yachts. The popularity of craft and owners is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes are distinguished by the impact they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that imposes the same relative liability on all the taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income increase in the same scale. A progressive tax is characterized by a larger than proportional increase in the tax burden in regard to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional rise in the relative burden. Therefore, progressive taxes are regarded as fighting a lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes might result in increasing these inequalities.
The taxes that are often thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, can become less so in the upper-income categories—in particular if a taxpayer is able to lower his tax base by nominating deductions or by taking some particular income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income demographics could also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are made.
Income measured over a given year may not definitely give the most suitable measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory increases in income may be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to provide for consumption by reducing savings. Thus, if taxation is regarded with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than when held in comparison with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are usually regressive, because the share of individual income consumed or spent for a specific good decreases as the level of personal income rises. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), nominated as a set amount per capita, clearly are regressive.
It is not simple to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of a lack of certainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden is dependant crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.
In regarding the economic purpose of taxation, it is relevant to distinguish between various ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates will be dictated in the law; usually these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. So, if tax liability increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislature usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates must regard provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than specified by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to know the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, as it may rely on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates show the fraction of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households can dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that lower as income increases.
