The common question asked when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and different models available, it can be challenging for clients to make a decision between both technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors give far better image quality and colour accuracy. The article below tells you why DLP projectors struggle with projecting a similar grade of image quality.
Imagine a set of blinds in your home for your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel operates like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from when the projector is turned on to when the image reaches your screen is vitally important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to form the projector image. A significant point to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your wall all at the same time. The way a DLP projector runs is widely different and even the produced image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of forming an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then pull together each coloured element of the image into the total image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the highest brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have included a white segment for the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this goes and damages colour accuracy.
I read in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and thus must be better quality. For those who are uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications as compared to many LCD projectors. At one glance, this seems to be an advantage, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is utilised. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you want to project requires moving images, DLP projection technology also has image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because the colours are sent with the others. DLP builders have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up artifacts, but the expense of these projectors make them not practical for the large part of businesses and consumers.
Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how the various colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light differently. Usually with a DLP projector, a superfluous yellow colour will come up above and some blue will show below an image of something as simple as a single black line. While being built LCD projectors can be adapted to reduce these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.
The isolated actual advantage (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to mobility and has to be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. If the result of the picture quality is vital to you, then the decision is simple. Choose an LCD projector! LCD projectors will always produce bright, colourful images with fewer image blips. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), made additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 punt. Yachting rose as fashionable among the affluent and aristocracy, but after that time the fashion did not last.
The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, with much naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club went on, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other groups, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated fashion on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to sovereignty in 1820, it was then called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing setting of British racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. All members were required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for high bets were held, and the club life was splendid. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to over 350 tons.
In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English held power. Sailing was for the most part for fun and rose to its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and set a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the latter half of the 19th century. The craft of bigger yachts was first largely affected by the success of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its victory at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and built in the modern sense, with just a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the application of the research of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what such study had earlier done for hulls.
Because nearly all sailboats had been individually manufactured, there was a requirement for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were designed. Hence, a rating rule was written, which ended up in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and revised in 1919. In modern times, one of the fastest growing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to single dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for such boats can be had on an even playing field with no handicapping necessary. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
For the time that yachting belonged mostly for the nobility and the wealthy, expense was no object, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The rise and preference of smaller craft occurred in the latter half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the seaworthiness of less sizeable craft. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and leisure boats became more common, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, during which steam was set to emulate sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were used increasingly in pleasure yachts. Large power yachts were furthered to a high element, and long-distance travel became a fond occupation of the affluent. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave rise to boats powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. Like naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were only power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.
From the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of large steam yachts. In particular among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service in World War II.
As more sizeable and more reliable internal-combustion engines were developed, many bigger yachts began using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, progressed from World War I. In the decade after, large power-yacht creation grew, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the best auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The construction of larger power yachts fell away in 1932, and the fashion after that was in preference of smaller, less pricey yachts. From World War II, a lot of small naval craft were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting has become a internationally popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally manning and keeping their own small leisure craft. The amount of craft and sailors is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes can be categorized by the impact they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that impinges the same relative requirement on every taxpayer—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income move in the same scale. A progressive tax is recognisable by a higher than proportional growth in the tax onus relative to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the comparative burden. Hence, progressive taxes are viewed as taking away a lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes are found to increase these inequalities.
The taxes that are usually considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, might become less so within the upper-income categories—particularly if a taxpayer is able to lower his tax base by claiming deductions or by removing some income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income categories would also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are claimed.
Income measured over the period of a given year may not necessarily offer the most accurate measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory increases in income could be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer could choose to finance consumption by reducing savings. Therefore, if taxation is held in comparison along with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is held in comparison with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (except those on luxuries) are usually regressive, because the share of individual income consumed or spent for a specific good lowers as the amount of personal income increases. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), calculated as a standard amount per capita, obviously are regressive.
It is not easy to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of the uncertainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden lays crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being determined.
In analysing the economic purposes of taxation, it is important to differentiate between differing ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are those nominated in legislation; commonly these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Ergo, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates must consider provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than nominated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to understand the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may rely on considerations such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates signify the portion of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates generally increase with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households might dwarf these effects, allowing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that lower as income rises.
