The most common question heard when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and models available, it can be difficult for consumers to decide between these technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors have better image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph tells you why DLP projectors struggle with creating a similar level of image quality.
Visualise a set of blinds in your room over your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel works like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the time the projector is turned on to when the image reaches your screen is vitally significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to form the projector image. Something to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projector screen all at the same time. The way a DLP projector runs is totally different and even the produced image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of making an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a total image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create high brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have placed a white segment for the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this goes and degrades colour accuracy.
I hear in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior. For those who don’t know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of producing. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications compared to most LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be an advantage, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is utilised. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you want to see includes moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this downside because all the colours are sent at once. DLP designers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to fix the colour break up issue, but the price tag of these projectors make them hardly practical for many businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and recall how various colours of light refract differing amounts when shone through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light at different levels. Often with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will show above and a superfluous blue will come through below an image containing something as simple as a single black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is directed on isolated LCD panels.
The only actual advantage (excluding price) with deciding on a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to portability and must be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is important to you, then the choice is simple. Choose an LCD projector! LCD projectors will constantly show bright, colourful images with fewer image mistakes. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 punt. Yachting became classy for the affluent and aristocracy, but after that time the habit did not last.
The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and held great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club persisted, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by conglomerating with other clubs, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing was first seen in some organized method on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to monarchy in 1820, it was then named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued site of British yachting. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the accession of George IV. Every member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for large bids were held, and the social life was superlative. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to over 350 tons.
In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English took power. Sailing was mostly for pleasure and found its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and set a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the latter half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was first greatly put upon by the win of America, which was created by George Steers for a group started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and manufactured in today’s sense, with just a model used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the application of the research of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what such study had earlier done for hulls.
Because nearly all sailboats had been individually manufactured, there arose a desire for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule was decreed, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and edited in 1919. Today, one of the fastest blossoming areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to standard specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing those boats can be held on an even playing field with no handicapping at all. A perfect example is the generic International America’s Cup Class adopted for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
For the time that yachting belonged mostly for the aristocracy and the affluent, money was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The rise and desire of smaller yachts came in the second half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the hardiness of less sizeable boats. Later in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure craft became more popular, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, when steam began to replace sail power in market vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly used in leisure vessels. Sizeable power yachts were furthered to a high element, and long-distance sailing became a fond pastime of the wealthy. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave way to boats powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were only power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.
During the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the manufacture of large steam yachts. Conspicuous within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service in World War II.
As larger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were developed, many bigger yachts began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. From the decade after, bigger power-yacht creation flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The building of large power craft declined after 1932, and the trend thereafter was toward smaller, less pricey craft. Following World War II, lots of small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally loved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually sailing and maintaining their own small leisure craft. The popularity of boats and yachtsmen has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas by the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes can be categorized by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that imposes the same relative onus on every taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in equal levels. A progressive tax is recognised by a more than proportional increase in the tax onus in regard to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional rise in the relative liability. Therefore, progressive taxes are seen as removing inequity in income distribution, but regressive taxes are seen to have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.
The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, could become less so for the upper-income demographic—particularly if a taxpayer is able to reduce his tax base by declaring deductions or by taking some particular income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income demographics would also be more progressive if personal exemptions are claimed.
Income measured over the period of a given year might not definitely come up with the most suitable measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory increases in income may be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer could opt to pay for consumption by reducing savings. So, if taxation is held in comparison along with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is compared with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the spread of one’s income consumed or spent for a specific good lowers as the amount of personal income increases. Poll taxes (also called head taxes), levied as a set amount per capita, obviously are regressive.
It is not simple to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden depends fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.
In considering the economic effect of taxation, it is relevant to distinguish between differing concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those nominated in the legislation; generally these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income taken by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Ergo, if tax liability rises by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates must take into account provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lowers by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than nominated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to know the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, since it may be reliant on such factors as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually grow with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households can swamp these effects, forcing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that fall as income increases.
