The common question heard when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different models available, it can be confusing for consumers to decide between both technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors give far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph will explain why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up an equal rate of image quality.
Think of a set of blinds in your household for your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel functions like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the time the projector is switched on to when the content reaches your screen is extremely significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. An important point to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your screen all at once. The way a DLP projector runs is vastly different and even the final product of how an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of making an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then pull together each coloured element of the image into the single complete image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the top level of brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have added a white segment in the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this further damages colour accuracy.
I see in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior quality. For those who do not know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is able to produce. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications in comparison to most LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be an advantage, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is being used. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you want to project includes moving images, DLP projection technology also has image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this downside because all the colours are projected simultaneously. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up artifacts, but the expense of these projectors make them hardly practical for most businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and they taught you how various colours of light refract differing amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light at different levels. Usually with a DLP projector, an extra yellow colour will come through above and an extra blue will show below something as simple as a single black line. While being built LCD projectors can be fixed to take away these effects on the projected image, as each colour is projected on separate LCD panels.
The isolated true buy point (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to transporting the device and has to be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. As the Dutch rose to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht became a pleasure craft used first by royalty and then by the burghers for the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yachting rose as classy among the affluent and royalty, but after that period the trend did not last.
The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, with much naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club endured, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other clubs, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing began in some organized method on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to sovereignty in 1820, it was known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht club had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual location of British racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the accession of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for high bids were held, and the social life was splendid. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English held control. Sailing was largely for fun and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht group, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts followed the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the later half of the 19th century. The design of large yachts was originally largely put upon by the win of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and built in the modern sense, with only a model for an outline. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the study of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what such study had done earlier for hulls.
Because nearly all sailboats had been individually built, there arose a desire for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were built. Hence, a rating rule was written, which is found in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and amended in 1919. In the present day, one of the fastest blossoming areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to standard dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing those boats can be done on an even playing field with no handicapping required. A great example is the standard International America’s Cup Class taken on for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
So long as yachting was done largely for the royal and the affluent, expense was no problem, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and preference of smaller craft came in the second half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the value of less sizeable boats. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became more common, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, in which steam was set to emulate sail power in market boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were favoured increasingly in pleasure boats. Large power yachts were progressed to a high degree, and long-distance cruising became a favourite occupation of the affluent. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave rise to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the later half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.
In the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the construction of bigger steam yachts. In particular within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service in World War II.
As bigger and better quality internal-combustion engines were produced, many big yachts began using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, was furthered from World War I. From the decade that followed, bigger power-yacht building blossomed, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that time the largest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The manufacture of larger power yachts declined after 1932, and the trend after that was in preference of smaller, less pricey yachts. After World War II, lots of small naval craft were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting had become a globally popular competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually sailing and keeping their own small leisure craft. The amount of boats and owners is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional places on the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes can be differentiated by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that impinges the same relative liability on every taxpayer—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income grow in the same scale. A progressive tax is recognised by a higher than proportional growth in the tax onus relative to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional growth in the relative liability. Hence, progressive taxes are viewed as removing the lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes can cause an increase in these inequalities.
The taxes that are usually believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, may become less so within the upper-income categories—particularly if a taxpayer is allowed to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by taking some certain income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income demographics will also be more progressive if personal exemptions are claimed.
Income measured over a given year does not definitely provide the most accurate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory rises in income might be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to finance consumption by decreasing savings. Therefore, if taxation is made comparable along with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is held in comparison with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of luxuries) are usually regressive, because the spread of individual income consumed or spent on specific goods lowers as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), levied as a standard amount per capita, patently are regressive.
It is hard to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to a lack of certainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden lays essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.
In assessing the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between differing points of tax rates. The statutory rates will be specified in legislature; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Hence, if tax burden rises by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income rises. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates must review provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than indicated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, since it may be dependant on such factors as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates generally increase with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households can dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that lessen as income grows.
