The most common question that is asked when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many company brands and types available, it can be difficult for the buyer to choose between these technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors give far better image quality and colour accuracy. The following article will explain why DLP projectors struggle with projecting an equal grade of image quality.
Think of a set of blinds in your room covering your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And such is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel operates like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the point at which the projector is switched on to when the image reaches your screen is extremely significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. Something important to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projected surface at the same time. The way a DLP projector operates is vastly different and even the final product of how an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is directed through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of creating an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a single total image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form top brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have placed a white segment into the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this goes and degrades colour accuracy.
I hear in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be superior. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is able to produce. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications when compared to most LCD projectors. At one glance, this must be an advantage, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is being used. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you plan to bring to life needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because the colours are sent simultaneously. DLP manufacturers have formed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up error, but the expense of these projectors make them not practical for many businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how different colours of light refract differing amounts when directed through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light in a different way. Generally with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will show above and some extra blue will come through below an image containing something as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be set to minimize these effects on the projected image, as each colour is processed on separate LCD panels.
The only actual buy point (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to portability and cannot be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is important to you, then the choice is a no-brainer. Go for an LCD projector! LCD projectors will consistently create bright, colourful images with fewer image mistakes. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), built more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 bet. Yachting became popular for the affluent and nobility, but after that point the trend did not last.
The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and had great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club endured, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by conglomerating with other groups, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing began in some organized manner on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to sovereignty in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued location of British yacht racing. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the rise of George IV. Each member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for large bids were held, and the social life was lovely. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to bigger than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English held dominance. Sailing was largely for pleasure and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the second half of the 19th century. The craft of large yachts was first largely put upon by the win of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and built in a contemporary sense, with merely a model for an outline. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the science of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what such science had previously done for hulls.
Because almost all sailboats had to be individually manufactured, there arose a desire for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were built. Thus, a rating rule was decreed, which is found in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and revised in 1919. In modern times, one of the most rapidly blossoming areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to standard requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be held on an even playing field with no handicapping necessary. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
So long as yachting was done primarily for the aristocracy and the rich, expense was no issue, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and preference of smaller boats occurred in the later half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of small yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, when steam was set to take the place of sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in personal vessels. Bigger power yachts were furthered to a high standard, and long-distance sailing turned into a favoured activity of the well off. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then made way to yachts powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the later half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were exclusively power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.
From the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the manufacture of bigger steam yachts. In particular of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service in World War II.
As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were produced, many big craft began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, advanced from World War I. In the decade after, large power-yacht building blossomed, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that time the best auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The building of big power boats fell away after 1932, and the trend from then was in preference of smaller, less expensive craft. From World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting has become a widespread popular competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and upkeeping their own small recreational yachts. The popularity of craft and owners has increased steadily, not only in the traditional places along the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes are differentiated by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that places the same relative onus on each taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in relative levels. A progressive tax is recognised by a more than proportional rise in the tax liability relative to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional increase in the comparative onus. Ergo, progressive taxes are regarded as fighting inequalities in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes may increase these inequalities.
The taxes that are usually believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, can become less so for the upper-income demographic—in particular if a taxpayer is permitted to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding some certain income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income categories would also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are declared.
Income measured over the course of a given year might not necessarily offer the most accurate measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory growth in income may be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer may elect to provide for consumption by decreasing savings. Therefore, if taxation is regarded along with “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than if made comparable with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (excepting luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the share of one’s income consumed or spent for a specific good lowers as the amount of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also called head taxes), levied as a fixed amount per capita, patently are regressive.
It is not simple to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the lack of certainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden is dependant crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.
In considering the economic purposes of taxation, it is important to distinguish between differing concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those nominated in legislature; commonly these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income grows by one dollar. So, if tax liability rises by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates are required to review provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, since it may rely on considerations such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates commonly increase with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households could dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that decrease as income rises.
