The typical question that is asked when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and types available, it can be confusing for clients to make a decision between those technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors offer far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article tells you why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up the same rate of image quality.
Visualise a set of blinds in your room over your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel functions like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the point when the projector switches on to when the image reaches your screen is absolutely significant to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to form the projector image. Something to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your wall at the same time. The way a DLP projector functions is widely different and even the produced image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of forming an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then combine each coloured element of the image into the complete image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver the highest brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP manufacturers have added a white segment into the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this further lessens colour accuracy.
I hear in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and as such must be superior quality. For those who are unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of producing. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications in comparison to a majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this can seem to be a plus, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is used. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you want to bring to life needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because every colour is projected simultaneously. DLP designers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to fix the colour break up problem, but the cost of these projectors make them impractical for the majority of businesses and consumers.
Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember how various colours of light refract various amounts when shone through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in different ways. Usually with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will come up above and some blue will come up below an image containing something as simple as a single black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to take away these effects on the projected image, as each colour is projected on separate LCD panels.
The sole true benefit (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant for transporting the device and cannot be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 punt. Yachting became fashionable among the affluent and nobility, but after that period the habit did not last.
The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, with great naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by conglomerating with other clubs, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing began in some ordered manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to monarchy in 1820, it was known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht club had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual location of British yacht racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the accession of George IV. Every member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for large bids were held, and the club life was lovely. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to bigger than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English took control. Sailing was mostly for fun and found its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and set a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the later half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was originally heavily affected by the victory of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its victory at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in a contemporary sense, with just a model being used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what it had previously done for hulls.
Because most of all sailboats had been individually custom-built, there was a desire for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule was created, which resulted in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and edited in 1919. Today, one of the most rapidly flourishing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing these boats can be held on an even keel with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
For the time that yachting was done largely for the nobility and the rich, money was no object, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller boats occurred in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the seaworthiness of less sizeable boats. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, during which steam started to emulate sail power in market boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in pleasure yachts. Sizeable power yachts were developed to a high element, and long-distance travel was a favourite activity of the wealthy. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave way to boats powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were solely power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.
From the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the design of bigger steam yachts. Conspicuous of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service for World War II.
As bigger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were created, many large yachts were using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. In the decade after, large power-yacht building grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that point the best auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The building of bigger power boats declined from 1932, and the trend thereafter was toward smaller, less costly boats. From World War II, lots of small naval boats were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting is a widespread popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually owning and keeping their own small leisure boats. The number of craft and sailors has increased steadily, not only in the traditional places along the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes can be differentiated by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that places the same relative requirement on each taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in the same scale. A progressive tax is characterizable by a higher than proportional rise in the tax onus relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional rise in the comparative liability. So, progressive taxes are thought of as removing inequalities in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are found to result in increasing these inequalities.
The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, may become less so in the upper-income class—particularly if a taxpayer is able to lower his tax base by nominating deductions or by leaving out some income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income categories would also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are declared.
Income measured over the period of a year does not absolutely give the most accurate measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory rises in income could be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to provide for consumption by taking from savings. Ergo, if taxation is made comparable along with “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than if held in comparison with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of luxuries) are generally regressive, because the spread of individual income consumed or spent on specific goods decreases as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), nominated as a standard amount per capita, obviously are regressive.
It is difficult to dictate corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of a lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden rests essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.
In considering the economic purpose of taxation, it is relevant to differentiate between differing concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates are specified in the law; commonly these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Ergo, if tax liability rises by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income grows. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates must review provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) declines by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than indicated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, since it may depend on considerations such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households may dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that decrease as income grows.
