Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question heard when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and different types available, it can be difficult for clients to decide between the two technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors provide better image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph will explain why DLP projectors struggle with creating the same grade of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your house covering your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. Such is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel functions like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as professionals like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector switches on to when the content reaches your screen is absolutely important with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your wall simultaneously. The way a DLP projector functions is widely different and even the way an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of creating an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then put together each coloured element of the image into the complete image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer the top level of brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some designers have put a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this then detracts from colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior quality. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of producing. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications in comparison to a majority of LCD projectors. At one glance, this can seem to be an advantage, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is being utilised. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to bring to life needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this problem because every colour is projected with the others. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the price tag of these projectors make them almost impossible for many businesses and consumers.

Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember how the various colours of light refract differing amounts when shone through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light at different levels. Usually with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will appear above and some blue will appear below an image of something as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to reduce these effects on the projected image, as each colour is processed on separate LCD panels.

The isolated veritable plus (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht had been a pleasure craft used mostly by royalty and then by the burghers on the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, coming out of private matches. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), made more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 punt. Yachting became fashionable with the wealthy and royalty, but after that period the trend did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and held much naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other organisations, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some stipulated manner on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it came to be named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht club had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued location of British yachting. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the rise of George IV. Each member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great bets were held, and the club life was splendid. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English had dominance. Sailing was mostly for leisure and rose to its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and set a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts followed the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the second half of the 19th century. The design of bigger yachts was originally heavily affected by the success of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and built in today’s sense, with only a model being used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the application of the study of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what such science had done earlier for hulls.

Because almost all sailboats had been individually built, there was a requirement for handicapping boats previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Thus, a rating rule was created, which resulted in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and revised in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly blossoming areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to the same dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between such boats can be had on an even playing field with no handicapping necessary. A great example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was an activity primarily for the nobility and the wealthy, money was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The rise and preference of smaller yachts occurred in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the hardiness of small craft. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure yachts became more common, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, during which steam started to take the place of sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in pleasure craft. Large power yachts were developed to a high standard, and long-distance sailing turned into a preferred activity of the rich. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave way to boats powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht fashion for several years. By the later half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the manufacture of more sizeable steam yachts. Notably among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service during World War II.

As more sizeable and more dependable internal-combustion engines were developed, many large boats started using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, advanced from World War I. From the decade following, large power-yacht building flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the largest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of large power craft fell away after 1932, and the fashion from then was in preference of smaller, less expensive craft. Following World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting has become a widespread beloved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually owning and upkeeping their own small leisure boats. The amount of yachts and sailors increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas by the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are distinguished by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is one that imposes the same relative burden on all taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income move in relative scale. A progressive tax is characterized by a greater than proportional growth in the tax onus in relation to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional growth in the comparative liability. Ergo, progressive taxes are thought of as taking away a lack of equality in income distribution, while regressive taxes can have the effect of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are normally believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, might become less so in the upper-income categories—particularly if a taxpayer is permitted to lower his tax base by nominating deductions or by removing some particular income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income groups could also be more progressive if personal exemptions are made.

Income measured over the period of a given year may not necessarily give the best measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory increases in income can be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer might opt to provide for consumption by decreasing savings. Thus, if taxation is regarded with “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than when held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except luxuries) tend to be regressive, because the portion of individual income consumed or spent for a specific good declines as the level of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), levied as a flat amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is complicated to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to a lack of certainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden depends fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being determined.

In analysing the economic effect of taxation, it is essential to distinguish between various concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates are specified in law; often these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Hence, if tax burden rises by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates need to consider provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than specified by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to nominate the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, as it may rely on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the percentage of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates commonly rise with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households might swamp these effects, forcing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that decrease as income rises.

SSFLC devices have been produced for large passive-matrix displays, but their expense and complexity has prevented them from creating any particular impact on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, display some possibility for use as parts in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their immediate reaction allows them to be used in time-sequential colour systems, in which dear colour filters are emulated with a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in quick pace (approx 100 cycles a second). For example, the liquid crystal could be switched to a transmissive state between the red and green periods and then to a nontransmissive state during the blue period, having the end result that the eye sees an average of red and green light, or the colour yellow.

The History of the Chair

Two ancient Egyptian chair forms, both the result of skilled scheme, are now known from discoveries made in tombs. The first one of these is a four-legged chair with a back, the other a folding stool. The typical Egyptian chair would have had four legs shaped similar to those of a designated animal, a curved seat, leading to a sloping back supported from vertical stretchers. In this design a stable triangular form was crafted. There was apparently no marked differentiation in the structure of Egyptian thrones and chairs for typical citizens. The real variation exists in the brand of ornamentation, in the selection of more valuable inlays. The Egyptian folding stool most probably was developed as an easily stored seat for army officers. As a camp stool that form existed until much later points. But the stool also then was made for the character of a ceremonial seat, its mechanical role as a folding stool neglected or forgotten. This can from evidence be observed, from as early as 1366–57 BC in two stools, executed in ebony with ivory inlay decoration and gold mounts, from the tomb of Tutankhamen. They were in the shape of folding stools but can not be folded as the seats were formed with wood. The simple structure of the folding stool, being of two frames that rotate on metal bolts and hold a seat of leather or fabric held between them, then came up but somewhat later during the Bronze Age folding chairs of Scandinavia and northern Germany. The better known of this kind is the folding stool, crafted out of ashwood, now found at Guldhøj (National Museum in Copenhagen).

Greece and Rome
The iconic Greek chair, the klismos, is recognised not in any ancient object still in form but as in a variety of pictorial items. The best recognised is the klismos posited on the Hegeso Stele at the Dipylon burial place by Athens (c. 410 BC). This klismos is a chair with a backward-sloping, curved backboard and four curving legs, but only two of which were displayed. These curving legs were most likely to be created in bent wood and were likely to have been had to bear great pressure with the weight of the sitter. The joints fastening the legs to the frame of the seat had to be therefore super solid and were plainly indicated.

The Romans adopted the Greek designs; designs of models of seated Romans show designs of a thicker and are a somewhat less intricately constructed klismos. Both types, light or heavy, were seen again in the Classicist period. The klismos chair is seen in French Empire design, in English Regency, and in some brands of notable individuality in Denmark and Sweden during 1800.

China
The ancestry of the chair in China cannot be traced as long as that of Egypt and Greece. From the time of the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) an undamaged folio of sketches and works of art has been kept, showing the interiors and exterior of Chinese households and their furniture. Also kept of the 16th century are a collection of chairs crafted of wood or lacquered wood, that hold an amazing resemblance to styles of ancient chairs.

As were the designs in Egypt, two iconic chair forms existed in China: a chair having four legs and a folding stool. That four-legged chair can be designed both with or without arms although always with the square seat and straight stiles (vertical side supports) to give support to the back. In one type, though, the stiles are slightly curved over the arms so as to suit the angle of the S-shaped back splat (the centre upright of the back). All three areas were mortised onto the yoke-like top rail. While the idea of a back splat then had an influence on English chairs of the Queen Anne period, wooden pieces that would only to a particular extent reinforce corner joints (as well as being loose into the bargain) indicate a signature signatory to Chinese chairs. The four legs are set through the seat frame, which ends about the rounded staves. Every member is round in section or has rounded edges—referable maybe to the bamboo tradition. The seat is uncomfortable and occasionally had a plaited texture. These chairs needed the sitter to stay stiff and upright; for when too much pressure is placed on the back, the chair has a way of falling over. In patriarchal Chinese homes of this period armchairs probably were reserved only for the senior persons, for they were held in great esteem.

The Chinese folding stool is understood to have travelled to China from the West. It does not differ very much from the Egyptian and Scandinavian folding stools, but it has a dissimilarity in that the top rail is prettily fixed to the two legs of the stool by means of a curved member, which is generally designed with metal mounts. From a Western viewpoint the overall effect of both these furniture designs is stylized. The construction and decorative parts are combined in a manner that is simultaneously naïve and refined. The piecemeal appearance is a result of the manner that the individual items do not look to have been affixed by means of either glue or screws, but had been mortised into one another and held in place in the manner of a Chinese puzzle.

Spain: 17th century
The Golden Age of Spain during the 17th century also left its mark on the chair. Artworks display a kind of chair with a relatively unrefined wooden frame; a back and seat, nailed on, with two layers of leather, with horsehair stuffing between the layers, stitched to produce a pattern of tiny pads. The front board and a similar board in the back could be folded after unscrewing some tiny iron hooks. Thus the chair was a portable piece of furniture for traveling which, in the same period, possessed the dignity of a four-legged, high-backed armchair.

The Netherlands: 17th century
A low, square, upholstered design of chair is evidenced in engravings of the inside of affluent Dutch homes by Abraham Bosse, a French artist, and also in paintings by the Dutch artists Johannes Vermeer and Gerard Terborch. Although this design of chair can also be made in countries in which Dutch styles of interior decoration and Dutch furniture won favour, it is not determined that the innovation actually began in The Netherlands. Typically, the legs of the chair are smooth, round in section, and of slender dimensions; they are in some cases baluster-shaped (vase-shaped) or twisted. It is clearly a bourgeois piece of furniture and was produced in impressive numbers, as can be seen from one of Abraham Bosse’s engravings, in which there is an entire row of such chairs lined up by a wall. The style asserts itself by virtue of its elegant proportions and fine upholstery in gilt leather or fabric framed with fringes.

France and England: 17th and 18th centuries
The French Rococo chair in its most mature of styles—that is to say, as developed in Paris around 1750—conquered most of Europe and has been imitated or copied into the mid-20th century. The style owes the popularity to a combination of leisure and elegance. The seat adheres to the human body and allows a relaxed seated position. The back is bow-shaped, the legs curved. Usually the seat and back are upholstered, and there are small upholstered pads over the armrests. Smooth transitions made between seat frame, legs, and back cover all the joints, which are solidly constructed on craftsmanlike principles even with the absence of stretchers between the legs.

French Rococo chairs and imitations of them have wood of rather thick density; but each member is deeply molded, all superfluous wood has been taken away, and more expensive items might be further embellished with intricately delicate and decorative carvings. The wood may be varnished, stained, painted, or gilded. Silk damask or tapestry is used for all the upholstery on the seat, back, and armrests; cane is in some cases used in place of upholstery.

English chairs from the 18th century were more differentiated in design than the French. The French manner for stylistic uniformity, which came from the royal circles in Paris and Versailles within most of France and became the preference in large parts of the Continent, had no parallel in England. Prior to 1740, the most commonly used wood was walnut; thereafter, and for the rest of the century, it was mahogany. Walnut, though beautiful in hue, was soft and therefore less suited to wood carving than to rounded, curving forms. Outer surfaces, such as the back and seat frame, were usually veneered. During the walnut period, highly overstuffed armchairs, covered with leather or embroidered material, were also developed. The best upholstery of this period is precisely and firmly modelled and accentuated by braiding or tacks. When imports of mahogany became common, no specifically new chair designs appeared, but the character of the woodwork changed. Mahogany, having a firmer, closer grain, could be cut thinner, which meant that individual parts of the chair could be more slender in shape. Mahogany also lent itself better to carving than walnut. Carving was concentrated more on the arms and back than on the legs, which as a rule were straight and smooth with chamfered (bevelled) edges and molding. There was a wealth of variety in chairback designs, featuring elegant, pierced, vase-shaped splats or two upright posts connected by horizontal slats (ladderback).

Alongside the French Rococo chair and the best English chairs in walnut and mahogany, the stick-back chair was relatively unaffected by the stylistic changes of the day. Originally a medieval form, known, for example, from paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and still found in mid-20th century in the churches and inns of southern Europe, the stick-back chair (in all of its variations) consists basically of a solid, saddle-shaped seat into which the legs, back staves, and possibly the armrests are directly mortised. This typically peasant form underwent a renewal and a process of refinement in England and America during the 18th century. Under the name Windsor chair (a term that seems to have been used for the first time in 1731) or Philadelphia chair, it became commonly known and was widely distributed throughout the world.

Late 18th to 20th century
During the Neoclassical period, no basic changes took place in chair forms, but legs became straight and dimensions lighter. Backs in the shape of classical vases replaced the fanciful outlines of the Rococo period. Around 1800, freely executed imitations of Greek and Roman chairs of the klismos type, with curved legs and backrest, appeared. French chairs of the Empire period, executed in dark mahogany and embellished with ornate bronze mounts, created a ponderous effect.

In cheaper products of inferior workmanship, bourgeois chairs of the 19th century carried on the traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The only real innovations were the bentwood (wood that has been bent and shaped) chairs in beech that became popular all over the world and were still made in the 20th century. Around 1900 the continental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles (French and German styles characterized by organic foliate forms, sinuous lines, and non-geometric forms), and the Arts and Crafts movement in England (established by the English poet and decorator William Morris to reintroduce idealized standards of medieval craftsmanship), gave rise to original chair designs by Eugène Gaillard in France, Henry van de Velde in Belgium, Josef Hoffman in Austria, Antonio Gaudí in Spain, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland. These new furniture styles did not exercise wide, let alone decisive, influence. The Art Nouveau chairs designed by the French architect Hector Guimard, for example, are collector’s pieces, but his name is known to a broader public only because of his fanciful entrances to the Paris Métro.

Modern
After World War I, the Bauhaus school in Germany became a creative centre for revolutionary thinking, resulting, for example, in tubular steel chairs designed by the architects Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and others. During World War II, the aircraft industry accelerated the development of laminated wood and molded plastic furniture. The dominant chair forms of this period go back to designs by Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, and Charles and Ray Eames. Rapid technical developments, in conjunction with an ever-increasing interest in human-factors engineering, or ergonomics, indicate that completely new chair forms will probably be evolved in the future.

Jet Power and the Birth of the Jet Aviation Age

The invention of jet propulsion was ideal for fighter aircraft. Although at first it reduced range and endurance and often increased the take-off run. The German Messerschmitt Me 262 and the British Gloster Meteor twin jets saw action in 1944, together with the tailless Me 163 rocket interceptor which sacrificed range and endurance for astounding climb and speed in defending local areas against heavy bombers.

Germany was far in front of other countries in another factor too: armament. A range of 30 mm (1 inch) cannon, radically new high-speed cannon with multiple-revolver chambers, very large recoilless guns, spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets fired in salvoes, and wire-guided air-to-air missiles were all under test before the Luftwaffe s defeat. They gradually inspired similar developments in other countries: one German gun, the Mauser MG 213, led to the American Pontiac M-39, the French DEFA, the Russian NR-30, the Swiss Oerlikon KCA, and the British Aden, all of which are still in use.

Many early jet fighters were fitted into more or less conventional airframes. The fighter often considered the ultimate achievement of the piston era, the long-range North American P-51 Mustang appeared both in a twinned double-fuselage form and, with few changes, as a US Navy jet.

But the US Air Force decided to wait a year until its makers could sweep back the wings and tail at 35 degrees, which German research had shown could lead to higher speed. The result was the F-86 Sabre, which in 1948 set a speed record at 1,080 km/h (671 mph) and outflew all other fighters. Later versions carried radar and rockets and reached 1,150 km/h (715 mph).

During the Korean War (1950-3) the F-86 met a previously unknown machine built in the Soviet Union, the somewhat lighter and simpler MiG-15, and although the MiG could climb higher and had heavy cannon, the Sabre’s skilled pilots and better equipment gave it the edge in combat.

North American’s next fighter was the F-100 Super Sabre, which exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. The MiG bureau built the twin jet MiG-19, which was even faster, and is still in wide use. The US Air Force ordered various all-weather interceptors with largely automatic radar and flight control systems so that, with guided missiles, they could intercept and destroy enemy aircraft without the pilot ever seeing them.

The British ordered a jet-fighter flying-boat, but discovered that this way of doing business without airfields yielded an inferior fighter. The Americans suffered similar problems with a ‘hydroski’ fighter, which could dive faster than sound, but took off and landed on retractable water skis.

Two even stranger fighters were designed around powerful turboprop engines and, standing on their tails, screwed themselves vertically into the air (they were intended to operate from the confined decks of warships or merchant vessels). Britain built high-altitude supersonic fighters with ‘mixed power’ from a turbojet and a rocket. In 1957 the British Minister of Defence suggested there would soon be no more manned fighters at all, only missiles. The Americans stuck to fighters, but made them very large and armed them with missiles, but no gun.

Today the wheel has turned full circle. In the past 10 to 20 years there has been a powerful wish to get back to the ‘eyeball-to-eyeball’ type of confrontation of the man in the Sopwith Camel. The pre-eminent Western fighter, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, was rebuilt with an internal gun, a rapid-fire 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon with six barrels firing up to 6,000 rds/ min, and a slatted wing to pull tighter turns in combat.

New small fighters appeared, such as the General Dynamics F-16, which, although bigger and heavier than any single-engined fighters of World War II, are nevertheless small and light by comparison with such impressive machines as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and MiG-25 Foxbat, The RAF’s next interceptor, the ADV (Air-Defence Version) of the Panavia Tornado, is a careful midway compromise, smaller than the three monsters just listed, but with two engines, long range, powerful radar, and extremely effective Skyflash missiles.

Modern interceptors defend vast blocks of airspace up to 160 km (100 miles) in radius, with powerful radar able to look down at the surrounding land and water and spot low-flying intruders trying to slip through the defences unnoticed.
